Fighting the virus means fighting work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No bail-outs for big business, but a bail-out for the people and the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This requires large public investments to make our societies climate neutral, implementing policies of degrowth, and a different social relation to our environment. Naturally, the benefits and burdens must be shared fairly, as we realize an alternative organization of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already knew that it was necessary. This is how it\u2019s going to play out.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That a biomedical powerhouse like the U.S. should so thoroughly fail to create a very simple diagnostic test was, quite literally, unimaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cwe need to be prepared to do multiple periods of social distancing,\u201d says Stephen Kissler of Harvard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the nation will learn that preparedness isn\u2019t just about masks, vaccines, and tests, but also about  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2020\/02\/coronavirus-could-hit-american-workers-especially-hard\/607213\/\">fair labor policies<\/a>  and a stable and equal health-care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[O]nline algorithms and partisan broadcasters only serve news that  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/03\/how-republicans-and-democrats-think-about-coronavirus\/608395\/\">aligns with their audience\u2019s preconceptions<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2020\/03\/how-will-coronavirus-end\/608719\/\">How Will the Coronavirus End? &#8211; The Atlantic<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"We can build a better world after COVID-19\">We can build a better world after COVID-19<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people demonized by Trump are part of a vast, low-wage social reproduction workforce: The  <a href=\"https:\/\/tribunemag.co.uk\/2020\/03\/the-hospital-cleaning-scandal\">cleaning workers<\/a>  who come in unseen to keep hospitals, airplanes, offices, and grocery stores sanitized, often without any job security, paid sick time, or health care; the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/884b3k\/food-delivery-workers-told-us-about-their-indescribable-fear-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak\">food delivery workers<\/a>  who bring groceries and takeout to the work-from-home brigades or to the exhausted nurses and doctors on the frontlines; the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2020-03-18\/coronavirus-agriculture-food-supply-visa\">farmworkers<\/a>  who harvest everything we eat; and the Amazon  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/03\/17\/amazons-warehouse-workers-sound-alarms-about-coronavirus-spread\/\">warehouse workers<\/a>  who are packing our panic-ordered wet wipes and toilet paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When this crisis abates, we will live in a different world\u2014hopefully, one where we have learned how quickly we can adapt to a life that doesn\u2019t revolve around work and consumption but, instead, around taking care of one another.
